Our Favorite Ways to Enjoy Your Strength Around Noe Valley
We don't train just so you can deadlift more weight, hit a new squat PR, or finally get your first pull-up. Those are exciting milestones, but they're only part of the story!
We train so you can live a bigger, healthier, more adventurous life outside the gym.
Strength isn't something that only exists between four walls. It's hiking a trail without your legs giving out. It's carrying your luggage through the airport without asking for help. It's playing with your kids, tackling a steep flight of stairs, or saying "yes" to an adventure because you know your body is capable.
One of our favorite parts of coaching is hearing how strength shows up in our clients' everyday lives. We hear stories about backpacking trips, skiing vacations, moving furniture with ease, gardening without back pain, and feeling more confident trying something completely new.
So if you're wondering how to put all those squats, deadlifts, presses, and pull-ups to good use, here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy your strength around San Francisco!
Build Stability and Body Awareness at EHS Pilates
Strength and Pilates make an incredible team.
While strength training builds muscle and teaches your body to produce force, Pilates develops body awareness, coordination, breathing mechanics, and control.
If you've been deadlifting, squatting, and pressing consistently, adding Pilates can help you better understand how your body moves and improve your overall movement quality and core engagement!
Our favorite local studio is EHS Pilates. Their instructors do an incredible job of helping clients move with intention while building stability and control. It's a fantastic complement to a well-rounded strength program.
Support Your Body Through Pregnancy at Preggo Pilates
Pregnancy doesn't mean you have to stop moving.
In fact, staying active throughout pregnancy can help support strength, mobility, posture, and recovery after delivery.
We're huge believers that women deserve coaching that's specific to their stage of life, and that's exactly why we love Preggo Pilates.
Whether you're currently pregnant or preparing for postpartum recovery, their thoughtful programming pairs beautifully with strength training at Iron and Mettle!
Strong moms raise strong families, and we're proud to recommend businesses that help women feel capable throughout every stage of motherhood.
Improve Mobility and Recovery at Yoga Flow
The stronger you become, the more important recovery becomes.
Strength training asks a lot from your muscles and joints. Giving your body time to move through different ranges of motion can improve mobility, reduce stiffness, and simply help you feel good.
That's where Yoga Flow comes in.
Yoga can complement your lifting without replacing it - helping you do something to aid recovery on your rest day!
Strength and flexibility aren't opposites. They work best together.
Take Your Legs to Mount Davidson
There's something incredibly satisfying about using your strength outside.
One of our favorite local hikes is Mount Davidson, San Francisco's highest natural point.
The hike isn't technical, but it will absolutely remind you why you've been doing all those squats, lunges, and deadlifts.
Powerful glutes make climbing easier.
Strong calves help on the steeper sections.
Good cardiovascular fitness lets you enjoy the scenery instead of focusing on catching your breath.
When you reach the top, you'll get one of the best views in the city and a reminder that strength creates opportunities.
Test Your Legs on the Harry Street Stairs
Looking for a challenge that's a little closer to home?
Head over to the Harry Street Stairs.
They're one of our favorite hidden gems near Noe Valley and the perfect place to see how your training is paying off.
Every squat you've completed, every split squat you've powered through, and every deadlift you've finished has been preparing you for moments like this.
The climb is challenging enough to get your heart rate up but approachable enough that you can make it part of your regular routine.
Plus, the view at the top is worth every step.
Take Your Conditioning to Kezar Stadium
Strength and conditioning go hand in hand.
If you're looking for a beautiful place to run, walk, or complete interval workouts, we love Kezar Stadium.
Whether you're training for your first 5K, adding sprint work to improve power, or simply enjoying a few laps on a sunny afternoon, it's one of the best places in the city to move.
Strong legs make running feel smoother.
A stronger core improves efficiency.
Better hip strength helps reduce the aches and pains many runners experience.
Your lifting doesn't replace cardio. It makes your cardio better.
The Gym Is Just the Beginning
Our goal has never been to create women who are only strong inside the gym. We want you to hike farther than you thought you could. We want you to carry every grocery bag in one trip. We want you to chase your kids, climb every staircase, take the adventurous vacation, and say "yes" to experiences because you know your body is capable.
That's what all those squats, presses, deadlifts, lunges, and pull-ups are really for! The barbell isn't the destination. It's the tool that helps you build a life where your body never holds you back.
And we think that's pretty incredible.
