Benefits of Strength Training for Women

So - you love THAT popular bootcamp class. Or Orange Theory. Running races. Hot Yoga. Soul Cycle. Insert the name of ANY fast-paced fitness endeavor that brings you TRUE JOY. The type of fitness class or activity you finish and think: That was FUN! I LOVED that class. I feel SO GOOD. Those bootcamp-style, butt kicking workouts that leave you pretty sweaty and tired. But in a good way.

If that is your preferred way of working out - you go, girl. I see you.

But here's the thing. Every day we are here on this earth - especially us women - our muscle mass is deteriorating. The scientific name is called sarcopenia and without going into way too much detail or fear mongering - let's just say it's happening to all of us ladies over the age of 30. Basically we lose a little muscle year after year.

But here's the best part: Strength training dulls sarcopenia.

Listen - I hear you - "but my class - I go heavy! I use the heavy dumbbells!"

It's not the same. You cannot progressively lift heavy enough to see the effects of strength training in those types of environments. The fatigue masks your true strength potential. Those classes are, by definition, catabolic activities. They burn a lot of calories and break down your body (not in a negative way - might i add - if your goal is fat loss - this applies here) and they do not preserve muscle mass the way true, progressive TRAINING does. Nothing replaces strength training. I see strength training as a non-negotiable for all humans that we should be doing long into old age.

Those activities you love so much - that you hope to be doing long into your 50's, 60's and 70's?

Strength training is going be the reason you're able to continue to do those things.

Strength training will afford you the opportunity to take a bootcamp class at age 65 without worrying about injury. I don't know about you - but I certainly want to still be crushing workouts when i'm 65.
